About Event

You Are What You Practice by Sherry Ning

Everybody is religious, in the truest and most original sense of what it means to be religious: Religion comes from the Latin relegere, "to go over again; to carefully observe." And what are we made up of if not our attention and desires? What are we spending, ultimately, if not our time—the units of our life? What does it mean to practice (the violin, dentistry, philanthropy, Catholicism, anything)? Everyone already has something they devote themselves to again and again—a hobby, a job, a cause, a diet—does that mean we're all worshipping something, whether we'd call it one or not? Can we be religious but not spiritual?

Sherry Ning is the author of The Pluri Society and writes a bestselling Substack read by tens of thousands for its essays on the inner life. Her writings take a closer look at the old questions—how to live, what to want—through literature, philosophy, and myth. She is one of the most graceful essayists of her generation, and has earned a devoted following by giving words to experiences her readers had felt but could not describe.

Toronto Society events are always welcoming to the curious. If you wish to attend but are not able to afford a ticket at its listed price we have volunteer roles and other options available for discounts.

About The Hosts

About the Viaduct

The Viaduct is a lecture series highlighting people and ideas that could transform our city.

Season Four is about intention. What would it take for us to choose our future in a world that constantly seems to present inevitabilities.

Each lecture will be preluded by live music played by local artists, from R&B to classical. We meet to be changed—by a sentence that rearranges the mind, a frame that lingers in the dark, a story that can only be told once.

About the Toronto Society

The Toronto Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge is building intellectual infrastructure to promote education, community, and cultural creativity for the next 100 years and beyond.
