The Role

Work directly with Joss (our CEO) across mediums (especially video and writing) to lead a cultural wave of "returning to the real world". In this role, you'll cast community builders as a growing workforce of entrepreneurial protagonists who are collectively bringing about a future we can all be excited to live in. You'll use your deep intuition for world-building and storytelling to both capture the present and paint a compelling vision for the future.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the script writing, storyboarding, shooting, and editing of videos that make community organizing look like an awesome career path or side hustle

  • Hunt for moments and characters worth highlighting -- go to events, build relationships with organizers, and tell their stories across mediums

  • Riff with us on how we stay at the forefront of the cultural narrative around in-person community (in particular, aligning community building with entrepreneurship)

  • Manage our content strategy across platforms

What you'll bring:

  • You have a strong portfolio that demonstrates you could (in theory 😁) walk into a mediocre community event and come out with footage that makes people feel like they missed the party of the year

  • You love getting to know people, you ask good questions, you have a good sense of humour, and you make people feel at ease in front of the camera

  • You have a deep empathy for the viewer / reader and know how to tailor messaging, audio, lighting, pacing, etc. to resonate with different audiences

  • You know how to use high quality camera, audio, and lighting gear and can consistently get high-quality footage through both staged shots and capturing live events as a solo camera operator

  • You don't shy away from thinking deeply about things like the loneliness epidemic and the economy, but you remain action-oriented and optimistic that the future can be bright

  • Bonus: experience leading or growing in-person communities (especially if you produced high-quality writing / video as a driver for that growth)

What's in it for you:

  • Tell stories that matter -- media is a powerful tool for shaping the future, and this role gives you the opportunity to change the culture of the city you live in

  • Expand your creative range, never get bored -- each community has a different energy, you'll stretch and grow to capture the culture accurately

  • Cross-functional, interdisciplinary, multimedia work -- the narrative we're building doesn't stop when the video ends or the article is over: it's embedded in our product, our events, and how we show up when we work with hosts.

Who we are:

We're building a team that is driven, ambitious, and kind. We work extremely hard to support our customers (who are some of the most interesting, entrepreneurial, ambitious, and mission driven people in the world). We are incredibly proud to be growing alongside them.

We prioritize giving high performers the autonomy and space to grow. Joining us this early means you'll be trusted to make decisions that matter -- if that level of responsibility and learning is exciting to you (even if it's a bit terrifying), you're likely a good fit. If you’re worried you don’t meet 100% of the qualifications (nobody does), still apply. We’re looking to bring a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences to the table – don’t self reject, help us get to know you!

Our team has a strong in-person, collaborative culture and is based in downtown Toronto.

Compensation

The anticipated salary for this position is $80,000–$160,000 CAD annually, plus equity. Compensation depends on a variety of factors, including qualifications, years of relevant experience, specific skills, and education.

If you have any questions for us, please submit them with your application or reach out to wygo@wygo.world.

About The Hosts

Wygo builds software & support systems for in-person community organizers.

We're building the economic rails, professional networks, and discovery layer that will allow a new class of creators to step up and meet the exploding demand for real-world experiences.

Today, our ticketing platform is an operational home base for organizers. As we grow, we'll help hosts build their identities, strengthen their economics, and plug into resource-rich partner ecosystems so they can go from organizing one-off events to sustaining vibrant in-person communities long term.

Our Team

We (Joss & Chris) are the cofounders of Wygo, lifelong hosts, and Systems Design Engineering graduates from the University of Waterloo. We work super hard, love what we do, and have a ton of fun building this company -- we can't wait to welcome awesome new hires onto the team.

Joss has been building networks of community organizers since age 14, with her impact recognized by the Pearl Sullivan and TD Scholarship for Community Leadership. She and Chris were lead organizers at Socratica and UW Startups, growing the community to over 3,500 attendees and 100 hosts across 30 locations hosting regular in-person events. She works daily to build the complete support system community organizers need to be successful.

Chris has solo-built and maintained websites for multiple creative collectives, reaching over a million visitors. He's built our product from the ground up, is a skilled software engineer and user experience researcher, and brings a healthy dose of camp counsellor energy to the team. 😁

We love thinking from first principles and getting to the root of complex problems. We believe in getting our hands dirty (can be found cleaning up chairs after events), using our own product (we host a MEAN scavenger hunt), and letting our personalities shine through in our work.

Most importantly, we're building the world we want to live in.

We are thrilled to be supported by top-tier investors and advisors from N49P, Standup Ventures, Garage Capital, Zero21 Partners, Backbone Angels, and Good Future.

By registering for this event, you agree to share your registration responses with Wygo, the hosts, and any listed sponsors.

Photos and videos may be taken at this event for future promotional purposes. By attending the event, you consent to being photographed / filmed. If you'd prefer not to be photographed, please let the hosts know.

Hosts reserve the right to refuse entry or remove any participant who does not comply with the event rules or guidelines. Please be respectful of the hosts and other participants. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the hosts directly.
