About Event

The Ministry of Phonic Services presents Back to School Field Trip 2026, a month-long festival of experimental sounds and actions across the urban refuse of Toronto.

Starting before 8:30pm, PWYC, no one turned away for lack of funds.

About the artists...

We’re elated to welcome turntablist SlowPitchSound to send us into outer space, an artist whose technical playfulness merges with the interplanetary vastness of science fiction. A master of the craft, such being rare in Toronto to see dedication to the mighty turntable as an instrument, building and weaving sonic threads in real time. Coming back to town following a recent duo performance with Nicole Mitchell at the Guelph Jazz Festival, we’ve been really into his new album Mashup the Gates, a swirling foray of arcane celestial textures.

Fleshtone Aura & Sandro Perri are two of the most singular electronic producers this city has to offer, now being brought together as a duo. Both with sprawling discographies in a vast number of formations, Perri has recently been celebrating the release of the long-awaited sophomore album from Glissandro 70 (with Craig Dunsmuir). Fleshtone Aura, real name Andrew Zukerman, meanwhile, recently re-ignited his duo Cuddles with Brian Ruryk, on their unabashed archival album ‘Forever 12’.

Visiting us from their wooded home near Grimsby, Gayle Young & Reinhard Reitzenstein are inextricably linked to the pathways of experimental music in Canada. Young, an instrument inventor, composer, music historian, and general sculptor of sounds, has established a cohesive ecological practice through forming relationships with the enduring objects of the earth. She teams up with Reitzenstein, an environmental sculptor with works displayed across Canada, for a participatory set exploring the offerings of the venue’s region.

A brand new celebratory trio, tête à tête devolves from the craniums of Philippe Melanson, Matthew Pencer, and Thom Gill. Expect some bop and sway, electro-textural bubble blowing, and improvisational ingenuity in some configuration of guitar, electronics, and percussion.

And then stick around after for a karaoke closing party! Going until we run out of steam or our portable batteries are dead, celebrating this month of immense communal energy in style.
